BJP MEN ATTACK CONGMAN HOTEL: In an incident which does not find a
parallel in the history of Goan politics, over 70 activists of the
Bharatiya Janata Party, on July 6 morning, caused extensive damage to
hotel Mandarin owned by Ms Ilma Braganza, the wife of the Mapusa Block
Congress committee president, Mr Mathew Braganza. The BJP leaders and
activists were protesting against the statement made by Mr Braganza to a
local daily stating that if the former governor Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, had
no place to stay he would be willing to provide a suite in his hotel to Mr
Sahani to stay. (NT)
MINISTERS TARGET CONG LEADERS HOTEL: A mob of about 100 BJP workers led
by Law Minister and Mapusa MLA Francis DSouza and accompanied by
Agriculture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar, Tivim MLA Sadanand Tanavde,
Mapusa Councillor Subhangi Vaigankar and senior BJP leaders Datta Kholkar
and Ulhas Asnodkar, went on a pre-planned rampage at Angod-Mapusa,
targetting Mandarin Hotel owned by Mapusa Block Congress chief Mathew
Braganza. The mob manhandled the receptionist Freddy Mendes, destroyed the
telephone, television set, refrigeration, music system and sofa set. Even
soft drinks, soda bottles and flower pots were not spared by the mob. (H)
MLA DENIES INVOLVEMENT: Law Minister and Mapusa MLA Francis DSouza
vehemently denied his involvement in Tuesdays incident, wherein BJP
activists went berserk and targetted Mr Mathew Braganzas hotel. (H)
HOUSE ADJOURMENT: For the second consecutive day, the Goa Legislative
Assembly was adjourned for the day without transacting any business as
both the Ruling and Opposition sides created a pademonium in the House.

PARRIKAR ASSURES: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said he would
reign-in his party legislators and instill discipline so that the Goa
Legislative Assembly functions and carries out its business. (H)
TENDULKAR QUITS: A day ahead of the deadline to downsize his cabinet by
one, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced that he has forwarded the
resignation of Forest Minister Vinay Tendulkar to the office of acting
Governor Mohammed Fazal. Tendulkar said he abided by his partys decision
that he should resign and that he had no regrets. (H)
PRAISE FOR DEMOLITION AT BAINA: Offering a welcome respite for the
government from the all-round criticism it faced from the NGOs and
opposition Congress Party for the demolition drive at Baina recently, the
citizens of Mormugao and Vasco organised a rally yesterday expressing
solidarity and support to the government. (GT)
HELD FOR RAPE ATTEMPT: Maina-Curtorim police on Tuesday arrested
19-year-old Mauricio Michael DMello of Dongorim-Raia on charges of
attempting to rape a married woman. The incident took place at about 7.30
am when the woman on reaching her children to school, was working in the
kitchen. The womans cries invited attention of the neighbours, who,
however, found the doors closed from inside. The door was later opened
with the help of a carpenter. (H)
ONE COMMITS SUICIDE: Custodio Fernandes (41), a resident of Cuncolim,
committed suicide hanging in a factory veranda. He was working as a
gardener at different places and was mentally disturbed since the last few
days, according to his brother. (GT)
DOUBLE MURDER CASE: The Cuncolim police arrested one Sarvanand Soiru
Gaunkar (35), a resident of Morpirla, in connection with the double murder
case reported at a remote place near Nevra-Vantem, Cottamol, about 12 km
from Cuncolim, where Rayu Faldesai (65) and his wife Shantu Faldessai were
found murdered. (NT)
MARGAO TRUCK TERMINUS: Decks have been cleared for the proposed truck
terminus at the northern entrance to Margao city as a petition filed by
some residents against the proposal did not find favour with the High
Court. (H)
DIRECTOR OF TOURISM TRANSFERRED: The state government yesterday
transferred Director of Tourism N Suryanarayana and posted him as director
of Printing and Stationery, Panaji, with immediate effect. (GT)
HELMET ISSUE: The helmet issue was presumed dead and buried but
resurrected making the two-wheelers go mad. Some people had predicted that
the issue would come up after the elections of the LS are over, and it has

GOAN WRITER BAGS LITERARY AWARD: Noted Goan writer, Mr Govind Naik, has
bagged the prestigious Maharashtra State Literary award for his book Ek
Aswastha Parv. Three-act play written by Mr Naik, the book was awarded
the Shahaji Maharaj Gaikwad Puraskar, which carries a cash prize of
