MURDERS, RAPES: CM BLAMES NON-GOANS: Expressing concern over the
involvement of non-Goans in the criminal activities, Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar told the Goa Assembly on July 15 that the government
would screen all the non-Goans in the state soon. However, he maintained
that the law and order situation was sound in the state. He was replying
to the discussion during the Demands for Grants for home, police, jails,
home guards and civil defence, fire and emergency services and Goa Public
Men's Corruption, Investigation and Enquiries, all amounting to Rs.68

--Illegal Fishing: The Goa Assembly on Thursday (15 July) witnessed noisy
scenes over illegal fishing activities going on in the state despite the

questioned Health Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar about the non-availability of

concern over the decision of the Indian government to impose tax on NRI

would hold a meeting to thrash out the NRI tax issue at length, states a

Bicholim, committed suicide at his residence yesterday by hanging himself
to the ceiling with a rope. The motive of the suicide is yet to be

PANCHAYAT RAIDED: Sleuths of the Vigilance department on July 15 morning
swooped down on the Zilla Panchayat, South, and seized a file relating to
the construction of a road at Fatorpa, following a complaint that the ZP

HOUSING SCHEME FOR POOR: The State government announced on July 15 a new
housing scheme - Ambedkar Awas Yojna - that offers land upto 100 sq metres
to the poor and homeless. The scheme replaces the earlier 20-point
programme, which was largely manipulated due to lacunae in it, Minister
for Revenue Pandurang Madkaikar told reporters. (H)

NARROW ESCAPE FOR MOON MOON SEN: Actress and celebrity Moon Moon Sen had a
miraculous escape when the aircraft she was travelling in developed a
technical snag during taking-off from Dabolim international airport at
6.15 pm on July 15 evening. Airport sources said that the King Air
aircraft, belonging to Venkateshwara Hatcheries, had excess fuel in one
tank and that one of is engines caught fire during take-off. The pilot
aborted take-off and the Mumbai-bound plane had to be taxied back to the

YOUTH DIES: Schimachus Fernandes, a 23-year-old youth from Raia, died in
an accident after falling off a two-wheeler he was riding, in the early

LOCOMOTIVE-HIT: Sixty-three year old Esperanca Fernandes from Benaulim
died on the spot after she was hit by a locomotive, while she was trying

Centres have been set up by the Centre in all the States across India, to

AWARENESS FIRST: The implementation of the law on use of helmets for
two-wheeler riders is likely to be delayed as the authorities are keen to
conduct a campaign to create awareness about the benefits of the headgear

day-long seminar for the two-wheeler riders, concerned authorities and

CUNCOLIM'S HISTORY: The Cuncolim Chieftain Memorial Committee on July 15
adopted a resolution demanding the inclusion of the valiant history of
Cuncolim village in the history text books. The resolution was adopted
unanimously at a function held to observe the 421st death anniversary of
the 16 Chieftains from Cuncolim who laid down their lives for the cause of
Swaraj (political freedom) and swardharma (freedom of religion) at the
Chieftains memorial. (H)
EMPTY PROMISES, EMPTY CATCHES: Fishing is an important industry in Goa but
is care being taken to protect the seas from rogue trawlers...It is a
proven fact that the fish catch is not increasing in Goa. From 17,000
tonnes in 1961-62 it reached an all time high in 1992-93 when the catch
registered was 97,014 tonnes, but even 10 years later it has not touched
that point again and in recent years. The catch remains stagnant in the
range of around 70,000 tonnes annually and if this apathy continues then

called Goan Touch. It is a band that promises to chance the music scene in
