Dear Study Group Members,
Join us in Minneapolis at our *History of Theory* panel on *Thursday*
from* 7:30pm
to 9:30pm* · Location: Greenway Ballroom D-G!
We will talk about the "*Histories of Hidden & Vernacular Music Theories” *to
reconsider what gets to count as music theory in our histories of the field
.
We will be joined by Thomas Christensen (University of Chicago), Michael
Gallope (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities), Anna Gawboy (The Ohio State
University), Robert Gjerdingen (Northwestern University), Olivia Lucas
(Louisiana State University), who will reflect on the roles that concepts
of hidden/vernacular music theory play in their work. They will also be
responding to three lightning talks:
-Malte Kolbe (Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London): Can a rehearsal
be an archive? Ornette Coleman and the limits of theorising an errant
practice
_Anna Aldins (Yale University): Theorizing Similarity in Latvian Melodies
and Ethnographic Marginalia
-Frederick Cruz Nowell (Cornell University): “Cosmic Rhythm”: Music Theory
and Non-Objective Painting
Looking forward to seeing you in Minneapolis!
AMS History of Theory Study Group (Giulia Accornero, Siavash Sabetrohani)
SMT History of Theory Interest Group (William O’Hara, Daniel Walden)
