Let me add my echo to Daphne’s echo below! Thanks so much to Ed Klorman and to Nathan Pell for their leadership, and extending a warm welcome to Dan Ketter. I look forward to our meeting on January 14; I’ll certainly hope to be there!

Very best,
Janet Schmalfeldt

Yes, I’d like to echo the thanks to Ed, who has been a driving force for PAIG during his term (and extended term!) as chair. We so appreciate your dynamic leadership.

Thanks also to Nathan for your ongoing work and blog editorship, and welcome to Dan!

Dear PAIG members,

We hope you are all healthy and well, and enjoying this year’s virtual SMT conference. We have two important announcements in this message.

First, rather than meeting over the SMT/AMS conference weekends, the leadership of the Performance and Analysis Interest Group chose instead to hold our annual meeting at a later date. Perhaps, we hoped, separating our meeting from SMT and the academic calendar would be less demanding on participants’ and attendees’ schedules. Therefore, we have scheduled this year’s PAIG meeting for Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 5:00–6:30 pm Central Standard Time, over Zoom. Please save the date! Details will follow in a later email, but we can announce now that we are excited to present four lightning talks:

Thomas Ingram, “Riemann’s Phrasing Edition and the Energetics of Meter”
Olivia Lucas, “Analyzing Performance and Performing Analysis: Light Shows in Hip Hop and EDM”
Gilad Rabinovitch, “An Analysis of Gabriela Montero’s (2012) Live Improvisation on ‘Nun danket alle Gott’”
Michael Rector, “Performing Structure: Tempo in Glenn Gould’s Goldberg Variations”

Second, we are thrilled to announce that Dan Ketter (Missouri State University) will assume the role of PAIG co-chair, taking over from Ed to serve a four-year term commencing after this year’s SMT meeting. Dan holds a PhD in music theory as well as a DMA in cello, both from the Eastman School of Music; and many of you will have seen his recent SMT-V publication<http://secure-web.cisco.com/1QdZ4bfOcrWBNcKA_dfyWWF5sXxd2l4wSB6pFgPrClvovA8gqmPP_h6DdK_sKtkTyOKXBPd17NiR29KPlYDsUzbsVLL7jqpGh0z570GJ2wJ-4as9kjPorcSuMnjW0Xs_MnCw6cI-wtOZPvQU-aLLFy3RyQA9U7MeKRDRa5BAOKXC79h_SkxyncxoZn2hCxpUR66D0KMG8f2dO5YttWGk0B6r61JqA9eYaHPPjWOSKvre-hdSbjw9sOghVHaqIXBbHpQMFsODtzLzeKoRt8Gl6wusIRMpn__5eaZgegc5S0qwA80UPKB1jgaIJhZrRgznJzzsgVKvLU3yhc89dcd-12vq2c8NzIc6R9zn2A-A_N5BRmxU3rMJMDyJ7kAbApQ8OzxE0XL_997vOW_fB2x1wu174rKVT4XzC21UgORHkpPEQv3zr7fivsHKRcWyMGm5TXbtEjBnqtIW1t5BxvjjSQjfvsTA8X1VBSxKgHd3EYXg/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smt-v.org%2Farchives%2Fvolume6.html%23discovering-essential-voices-in-johann-sebastian-bachs-solo-instrumental-suite-movements> entitled “Discovering Essential Voices in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Solo Instrumental Suite Movements.” Dan is appointed without an election since he was the sole nominee in response to our call for nominations in July 2020. Welcome, Dan!

All best,
Nathan and Ed
