"ei" is invariably like English "eye" or "I"; "eia" should acquire a "y" along the way, and be rendered "eye-ya"

Subject: [Smt-talk] German christmas hymns.

Dear german-speaking colleagues,
The word "eia" occurs in many German christmas hymns, e.g., in "Zu Bethlehem geboren": eia, eia, sein eigen will ich sein. Our choir has mixed opinions on how to pronounce the syllable "ei" in "eia" (like the English word "wide", or like "rain"?) Your help will be appreciated.

With best wishes,

Reinhart Frosch,

Dr. phil. nat.,
