Forgive my own-horn-tootin', but allow me to suggest my book, "The
Concertgoer's Guide to the Symphony Orchestra." It was published last
year by The Music Gifts Company (http://www.musicgiftsofengland.com/).
It's not on their web site but easily available, and while it's not a
discussion of music for the layperson per se it does cover a lot of
ground and, hopefully, makes the concertgoing experience a more
enjoyable one. The contents:
I. Welcome to the Symphony
* Who goest to concerts?
* Finding a concert, getting tickets.
* What to wear.
II. What You Should Expect, What is Expected of You
* Concert etiquette or "The Golden Rule" for concertgoers.
* Who is that? (Conductors and what they do).
* What is that? (Typical instruments of the orchestra).
* Why are there singers onstage?
* You =can= tell the players without a score(card).
III. You Can Look it Up
* Programs (and how to read them).
* A =very= brief look at the history of the orchestra.
* A timeline of musical eras and some composers.
IV. Musical Roadmaps (Kinds of Works and Forms)
* One-movement works.
* Multi-movement works.
V. But Wait, There's More!
* Things to do =after= the concert.
* A basic repertoire list.
* Some suggested reading.
The suggested list price is $6.95 (68 pages, black-and-white
illustrations). Some orchestras have been buying copies to sell at
concerts as fundraisers, etc., or just as giveaways.
