[Smt-talk] Teaching for free

I've been teaching composition and theory privately, for free or for pay
depending on the student's circumstances, for the past 24 years. This is
done entirely in an informal, non-institutional way; I don't publicize
this activity, but younger musicians seem to come to me in a steady stream
based on some of my music they've heard, articles or blog items I've
written, or personal recommendations. This activity keeps me in touch
with lively musical minds and has often been a source of compositional
inspiration. In doing this work, I like to think I'm continuing a
tradition of the same kind of private tuition I received from a few superb
teachers, including Lou Harrison, Douglas Leedy and La Monte Young and the
tuning theorist Erv Wilson, each of whom also benefit in their youth from
their own private teachers.
