Beethoven seems to have been fond of using the cited term for "authorities" with whom he disagreed.

In the margins to Gottfried Weber's discussion of Mozart's Requiem (in "Caecilia"), Beethoven wrote "O du Erz Esel," and later "doppelter Esel." (See the German edition of Thayer's Beethoven biography.)
