Dear colleagues,

I regret to inform you that Professor Dr. Hellmut Federhofer died on May 1, 2014, in Mainz, at age 102. Born in Graz (Austria) on August 6, 1911, he was head of the Department of Musicology at Mainz University from 1962 to 1979. He combined widespread interests in both musicology and music theory, two fields which he conceptualized as complementary. His contributions to music theory concentrated on the history of music theory (especially music theory in Austria, e. g. on Johann Joseph Fux) and on the life and works of Heinrich Schenker. Hellmut Federhofer was a student of Oswald Jonas, and he continued to be a steadfast advocate of Schenkerian theory in Austria and Germany. Among his articles, books, book reviews and editions were fundamental contributions to the life and works of Schenker, most notably his edition of Schenker's early articles and his documentary biography "Heinrich Schenker, nach Tagebüchern und Briefen in der Oswald Jonas Memorial Collection" (1985). Hellmut Federhofer continued an active scholarly life after retirement with numerous publications in his areas of expertise (ranging from regional research in the music of Austria and the Rhine region to the above-mentioned fields of music theory), as an often critical companion of modern music, and as an ever thoughtful and friendly advisor to his younger colleagues.
