Thank you Kris Shaffer for providing the authorized hashtag for the
AMS/SMT conference:

#amsmt

That there is still so much confusion about this issue underscores how
some in our communities think of Twitter as some kind of low-priority,
ephemeral add-on.

To many people and communities, Twitter is THE preferred form of
communication (look at the Digital Humanities).  For most academic
conferences, Twitter is the main vehicle for backchannel communication,
often commenting and elucidating the talks.

Hashtags are used by many forms of communication beyond Twitter.

For those of you organizing future conferences, please consider assigning
a hashtag at the outset of your publicity and outreach.
