How do members of SMT-talk who have participated in the composition
pedagogy discussion respond to Ralph Shapey's "Course in Compoosition"
(Presser) and to his assertions about being able to teach "competence,"
at the very least, as presented in the chapter "Shapey In his Own
Voice," published recently in Contemporary Music Review 27/4
& 5 (2008)? Shapey was addressing your concerns, raising the issues
directly, and suggesting solutions related to his personal approach to
composition. Maybe the success he had related to the clarity of his
self-analysis.
