<div>Two essays by Carl Schachter: (1) Chopin's Prelude, Opus 28, No. 4: Autograph Sources and Interpretation," in Chopin Studies 2, ed. John Rink and Jim Samson (Cambridge UP). A beautiful essay, richly written, well organized, and insightful. I use it as
an example of how good analytical writing can be readable. (2) "Schoenberg's Hat and Lewis Carroll's Trousers" in Aflame with Music: 100 Years of Music at the University of Melbourne, ed. Brenton Broadstock et al. Aside from its startling title, a good treatment
of the relation (or lack thereof) between Schenker's theory and politics—and difficult to find.</div>

I’m trying to compile a list of readings for students just beginning to explore the many aspects of the field of music theory.<span> </span>The readings would be on the beginning graduate level and would include two categories: (1) introductions to the various
sub-disciplines and (2) “classic” essays that one should know, such as Lewin’s phenomenology article. Even given the enormity of publications, I am hoping to compile 12 to 20 articles or book chapters that show the breadth and depth of our world.<o:p></o:p></p>
