The musical world that Haydn inhabited would not allow the kind of muscularity that Ludwig displayed on occasion. Music in the Roccoco tended to be gentele, relatively predictable, and seemingly born of rational process--yes, perhaps feminine. From time to time it briefly shifts to the dark side, but the kind music that might accompany the storming of the Bastille was derigeur in polite circles. </div><div><br></div><div>So the question is: How masculine could the music of Haydn have been if he were wearing a wig, face powder, lacy shirt, stockings, and high heels when he wrote it? Besides, the symphony after Beethoven was a very different affair. <div><br></div><div>Thanks for reminding us that Beethoven was the quintessential Classic/Romantic composer. He was capable, as you have demonstrated, of being the lovely, sweet, rational purveyor of perfectly pleasant music, and then he could turn around and write music that was way ahead of its time in terms of the wildness and storminess of its aggressive, muscular character. The order of his symphonies has always reminded me of Jekyll and Hyde in the way the characters alternate from odd numbers to even--in antiquated terminology, from masculine to feminine. This duality works great for a writer of symphonies but you wouldn't want to marry a guy like this. ^ _ ^</div>
