Beethoven, as well as all other normal composer, used surely some rules, but that's not less sure that he heared with his inner ear ALL he wrote and also all other scores (of different composers) that he examined. In Moscow and St Petersbourg conservatoires in XXth century (and may be equally before), advanced students, to develop their inner hearing, had to begin with Haydn's quartets and the task was to try to "hear" everything, until the smallest details. When it worked well they had to study more complicated scores and so on. That were ordinary (gifted) students. So is there any doubt that it was not excessively difficult task for Beethoven ?</P>

Beethoven composed (“analysis of Beethoven’s scores from different times” he writes “also shows that most rules were the same or similar across the second half of his lifetime”), by his logic the answer to his question is very simple: every decision <B>not</B> based on some “rule” was based on auditory imagination. In late Beethoven, I would imagine, this would constitute a sizable percentage of decisions.</SPAN></P>
