THE CAMERA DOES NOT LIE: IT Minister Francis D’Souza’s lie stands exposed
with the video footage on the rampage by BJP activists at Hotel Mandarin
and at the residence of Mapusa Block Congress president Mathew Braganza’s
residence, clearly showing his involvement as he enters the hotel along
with the unruly mob. D’Souza had on Tuesday denied his involvement in the
damage to Hotel Mandarin and the residence of Braganza. (GT)

CONG PRESIDENT SEEKS GOVT’S DISMISSAL: Stepping up its campaign against
the Parrikar-led government in the state, the Congress yesterday
petitioned the President of India focussing on incidents of vandalism in
the last one month and sought dismissal of the ministry for what it called
state-sponsored terrorism. (H)

5,458 POSTS VACANT: There are presently 5,458 posts vacant in altogether
77 government departments, including government colleges, with 46 staff
members awaiting re-deployment, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar,
informed in a written reply to the Curtorim MLA, Mr Francisco Sardinha.

MAPUSA STILL TENSE: Mapusa continued to remain tense yesterday over the
attack on Hotel Mandarin on Tuesday morning by BJP activists. Over 200
workers of the Congress party gathered at the residence of Aldona MLA
Dayanand Narvekar at Duler to plan a morcha in the city to press for a
Mapusa bandh. However, party leaders advised the activists against the
morcha and the same was disbanded. (GT)

ASSEMBLY ADJOURNED FOR THIRD DAY: The discussion and voting on Demands for
Grants for the year 2004-05 was passed by a voice vote in the Goa
Legislative Assembly without the Opposition moving the cut motions, even
as Speaker Vishwas Satarkar earlier adjourned the House for one hour

STINKY TOILETS, NO WATER IN SCHOOL: A prestigious school in the capital
city, which is just about to complete its platinum jubilee, is still
unable to provide drinking water facility to its staff and students

three different rented premises
Any visitor entering the building where
the school has hired a floor for classrooms gets nauseated with the toilet
blocks situated right amidst the classrooms and the staff room meant for

WOMAN ENDS LIFE: A 32-year-old woman from Bicholim – Shobha alias Pranoti
P Phadte – committed suicide by jumping into a well on July 7. Police said
Shobha had been undergoing psychiatric treatment. (H)

SHOP BURGLED: Unknown culprits broke into ‘Mini Dubai Shoppe’ at Cabessa,
Santa Cruz, on Tuesday night and decamped with mobiles, prepaid vouchers
and cash totally worth Rs.26,948. (H)

DRY SPELL: Where has the rain gone? The dry spells are becoming more
frequent and causing some worry. The weathermen on their part are hoping
for a change in a couple of days. It is farmers in upland areas who are

ST FRANCIS XAVIER’S EXPOSITION: The 16th decennial Exposition of the
sacred relics of St Francis Xavier will be held at Old Goa from 21
November, 2004, to 2 January, 2005. The government with the coordination
of the church authorities has geared up its machinery to make the 43-day
exposition a success. The peak days of the exposition will be the
inauguration, 21 November, 3 December and 2 January 2005. The sacred
relics of Saint Francis Xavier will be kept for public veneration at Se
Cathedral daily from 22 November from 6 am to 7 pm. (GT)

KONKANI ALBUM: A new cassette of Konkani songs ‘Tin Thikam Somplim’
produced by Agnelo da Costa has been released in Goa. The title song
features the stalwarts of the Konkani movement – Felicio Cardoso and Fr
Freddy J da Costa who died in a tragic accidents just over a month ago.
The third person is Franky Pires from Siridao, who was driving the vehicle
in which Felicio and Fr Freddy were travelling. While Juju has scored the
music, the singers include Cynnet, Cajetan de Curtorim, Theresa, Sonia,
Joanna, Jose Rod and Agnelo da Costa. (GT)

‘SPIDERMAN’ IN PIRACY WEB: Even before the national release of the most
successful comic-book movie in history ‘Spiderman’, pirated versions have
hit the video libraries in the state. This situation was expected given
the hype ‘Spiderman’ continues to receive worldwide. (H)

‘CHILDREN OF HEAVEN’: The International Centre, Goa, and Moving Images
Film Club will be screening an Oscar-nominated film Children of Heaven’
(Iran, 1999) by director Majid Majidi at the International Centre, Dona
Paula, on 9 July at 6.30 pm. The screening is free to public and children

LECTURE ON PSYCHOANALAYSIS: Fundacao Oriente has organised a lecture on
‘Psychoanalysis and Artistic Creativity’ by Dr Sudhir Kakar as a part of
its ongoing project ‘The Representation of myths, fairy tales, fables and
composite animals in Visual Arts’ at 5.30 pm on 10 July. Dr Kakar will
discuss drawing and painting by artists Leonardo da Vinci and Dali.

DISCUSSION AT XAVIER CENTRE: A talk and discussion on ‘Goa: A Daughter’s
Story – History as Memory’ by Dr Maria Aurora Couto, will be held at the
Xavier Centre of Historical Research at 5.30 pm today.

FULBRIGHT FELLOWSHIP: Dattesh Parulekar, a doctoral research fellow at the
Centre for Latin American & International Studies, Goa University, has
been awarded the Fulbright Junior Research Fellowship to pursue his
doctoral research studies in the United States. Parulekar is working on
‘The act of state intervention and the United Nations in the post cold war
