GTB CASH FREEZE GENERATES MAXIMUM HEAT: The Global Trust Bank crisis has
ironically been a great leveler in more ways than one. Or the next three
months, each one of its account holders will have the same drawing
capacity of Rs.10,000. For most, it was a fraction of what they had in the
bank. But yet they all lined up for the consolation amount. It didn`t help
though. Long queues of customers continued to swell outside the branches
where police personnel had to be posted following unrest among common
depositors. (GT)

GLOBAL TRUST TO MERGE WITH ORIENTAL BANK: Two days after placing Global
Trust Bank (GTB) under moratorium, the Reserve Bank of India on July 26
said that the crisis-ridden bank would be merged with the Oriental Bank of
Commerce. The proposal to merge GTB with OBC was mooted in the interest of
GTB depositors, RBI Executive Director Usha Thorat said. (PTI report in
Herald)

HDFC STAFFER HACKS ATMS: Close on the heels of the Global Trust imbroglio,
an employee of HDFC bank fled after withdrawing around Rs.5 lakh from
various ATMs of the bank. Margao police are looking out for one Penvin
D`Souza (hailing from Mangalore), who allegedly broke ATMs at Verna,
Fatorda, Candolim and Tonca. (H)

PM HAPPY WITH GOA`S PERFORMANCE: CM: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar
Parrikar, called on the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi,
on July 24 and discussed various matters pertaining to the state. Mr
Parrikar said that Dr Singh hailed the state`s performance in various
sectors and assured full cooperation from the Centre. Mr Parrikar said
that he had broached the exemption in central excise duty to Himachal
Pradesh and Uttaranchal and requested the Prime Minister to grant a
similar concession to Goa. He informed that he had briefer Information and
Broadcasting Minister, Mr Jaipal Reddy, about the progress of the
International Film Festival in India related projects. (NT)

GOANS MAY DECLARE NO CONFIDENCE IN ALL MNC BANKS: With GTB virtually going
bust, Goans are likely to believe that the old world was better. It was at
least a safer world. A surer world. Now image the shock of a GTB customer
who has to get his daughter married, or send a draft to secure the
admission of his children or make a down payment for a flat. When these
realities hit them, they might not just revolt against GTB but against the
whole new system of plastic cards and quick banking. And return to the
days of taking a stroll to the bank. (Edit in GT)

GRACE CHURCH`S TABERNACLE DESECRATED: Unknown persons broke into the Grace
Church and desecrated the tabernacle and smashed five donation boxes on
Sunday ( July 25) night. The culprits first tried to break open the two
doors at the rear of the church and having failed, they then shattered the
window panes to effect entry into the church, according to parish priest
Fr Cleto Pereira...What has shocked the city residents is that the accused
have managed to commit the theft at the church premises just 200 meters
from the South Goa district police quarters. (GT)

Rs.1,01,66l,636 on the visit of four members of the International Film
Festival of India 2004 Core Committee along with two other delegates at

the IFFI. The Opposition MLAs grilled the government over the demolition
of the old Goa Medical College Campal buildings and charged that assets
over Rs.49 crore had been destroyed for creating multiplexes worth Rs.21
crore. (GT)

the Goa Assembly on July 26 that the government would commission the
Tillari Irrigation Project in a planned manner by prioritising the works.

Goa to formulate a heritage tourism policy. Goa is ideally suited for
heritage tourism in view of a number of its historic villages that are
relatively well developed, clean and usually have several large country
homes. IHHA (Indian Heritage Hotels` Association) sources also pointed out
that a number of Goan villages such as Assagao, Saligao, Aldona, Siolim,

designated as `heritage villages`.(H)

Usgao and Curti-Khandepar - from the lap of the Congress. Yesterday, the
BJP added yet another feather to its cap by upstaging its sworn rival
Congress from the Ponda Municipal Council. The chairperson of the PMC
Damodar Naik and the vice-chairperson Jasmina Dias were voted out of

IN PERNEM: Pernem taluka has 19 panchayats and about 28 villages and is
well connected with cities lying across two rivers - Terekhol and Chapora.
Surprisingly, the whole taluka has no central bus stand. At Pernem

bustling market places. Passengers with their baggage in the open in the
absence of any shelter...Prakash Talavnekar, who has studied the transport
