Dear SMT Members,
The SMT History of Theory Interest Group invites attendees of the upcoming Annual Meeting in Jacksonville to join us on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 in City Terrace 7 for a roundtable discussion focused on Jason Yust’s recent article “Tonality and Racism” and the accompanying responses, published in the past edition of the Journal of Music Theory (April 2024). The featured discussants will be Jason Yust, Thomas Christensen, Suzannah Clark, Phil Ewell, Liam Hynes-Tawa, and Megan Kaes Long.
Those who can attend are kindly encouraged to read the featured essay and responses in JMT 68.1 (link here<https://read.dukeupress.edu/journal-of-music-theory/issue/68/1>) before attending, and to bring any thoughts or questions they may have for advancing the discussion. Our main goal for the conversation will be to think more deeply about how to apply the knowledge we gain about the history of theory in the present day—in our research, pedagogy, and service to the field.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Danny and Abby (co-chairs)
