Dear Colleagues,

I’m excited to announce the publication of my book, Focal Impulse Theory: Musical Expression, Meter, and the Body, today, from Indiana University Press, in the series Musical Meaning and Interpretation.

In this book I theorize about a number of commonplaces for performers, such as the difference between feeling music in two vs. in four, or the possibility of feeling beats that are directed upwards or downwards. I offer a framework for thinking about these things, a framework that both brings familiar practices into sharper focus and facilitates strategic choices about when to employ the various options. These choices impact both the physical experience of performance and the sound produced.

For those interested in performance and analysis, one very general feature of the book is that it reveals a few discrete choices that have holistic influences on the infinite variations of sound possible in performance. Another general feature is that it shows that very basic analytical observations about music can be relevant data for the musicians making those choices.

For those interested in learning more, I’ve put together some short videos offering previews of some of the book’s ideas; one is already online and a second will go live in a week or so. They are found on this page: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/johnito/research/FIT/FIT.html

With best wishes for the new year,

John

*PS: Please get enough sleep. Missing sleep knocks down your immune system. Even mild sleep deprivation makes it more likely to get a cold virus. (Google it…)
I’ll be adding this tag to my emails until it seems like this message is getting out enough.
