[Smt-talk] Tritone subs and the subtonic neighbor

I've always regarded bVII - I as an enhancement of (or substitution for)
iv(add6) - I (bVII9 = IV/IV). Both progression are abundant in pop songs
of the Golden Era, but their significance has (IMO) not been sufficiently
acknowledged. Because iv(add6) - I(6) or iii7 often supports a descending
melodic skip or arpeggio and often highlights a poignant word or phrase in
the lyric, I've dubbed this schema the "plagal sigh." I've read a paper
re on this topic at some recent conferences, including CMS 2008, and am
currently expanding that paper into an article.
