A few years back there was an excellent book by Nicholas Cook called Analysis through Composition.  I used this text to help integrate composition into the theory curriculum with some success.  It is probably out of print by now (Oxford Univ. Press, 1995!) but many libraries will have it.  It would be a good resource for those who are looking to integrate these two skill sets.
