Interpreting "popular" pretty broadly:
King Crimson's "Fracture" (_Starless and Bible Black_) is a ten-
minute work primarily using whole-tone scale. Their music is full of
passages based on equal divisions. "Red," from eponymous album is
also whole tone (and some octatonic I think.)
