[Smt-talk] Addendum on Bach

Dear Ildar Khannanov:    You are very correct in pointing out to me that I
ignored my own advice in considering the  issue of ³perspective² as it
relates to the opening of the Tempest III.  The phrase goes from mm.
1-23(24), in three sections:  mm. 1-8, 9-15(16), 17-23(24), as an ABB form,
expanded from AB (AA¹ ?).  I would not call it a sentence.  The opening
I-V-I 8 measure ³subphrase²  goes I-V-I under 1-2-3.  The following
³subphrase² goes through the N then to a final cadence, and  is repeated.  A
couple of points

1. In Schachter rhythm I in Music Forum, the author looks at such openings
as complete motions -- -of the I-V-V-I variety, where a two part motivic
structure is underlaid with a counterpointing three chord harmony, I-V-I.
The opening of op. 2/3 is an example.  I think this phrase is the type you
are referring to.  I don¹t think it¹s the same here because of the 1-2-3
rather  than a DN as in op. 2/3 and the continuity of the texture.
Rothstein also considers the opening of op2/3 in his book on phrase rhythm,
showing the ABB construction,

2.   Rothstein in his book emphasizes the phrase as a unit of tonal motion,
and he has  a section on the ³suffix² (p. 70) as a form of phrase expansion.
Although the Tempest phrase does not follow R¹s criteria exactly, I believe
a case could be made that the phrase of 8 bars has a cadential suffix
attached, then the suffix is repeated.

3.  The issues includes my offering of perspective ‹mm. 1-8 surely go I-V-I
under 1-2-3,  -- and we could make an argument that, reduced, mm. 1-24 are
an expansion of 1-8.  But I should have said ³subphrase² or at least put it
in parens.

I would again, perhaps ridiculously, offer the notion of perspective.  In a
Baroque form, the key is built on I-V-I motions.  Often the I-V motion is
alluded to with a successive IV-I motion (leading up to later sonata
transitions)  ‹ but we don¹t say the form is based on I-V-IV-I, it is still
I-V-I,  the IV-I is on a lower level.   Whether or not key successions
duplicate chord successions may be debatable, obvious, reasonable, or
whatever, IMO if we accept Schenker, then we are forced to at least consider
it.

As for Wagner exceeding the voice-exchange, perhaps, but the power of
leitmotives is that they cause us to make associations across long stretches
of music (somewhat like those VE¹s shown in Alldwell/Schachter.)  But those
are not waters I want to cross.

I¹ll quite freely admit that my abilities place me in the Salieri category,
but I was merely trying to make the point that the qualities of chord
grammar that DT has been promulgating have a larger context than I¹m getting
from him:  the perspective of hierarchy, the nature of the instrument, the
level of compositional sophistication, the performance/compositional
practice of the time (Gjerdingen), the intent (piano sonatas for students
versus chamber music for experts, etc.).

I¹ll end by saying that to have computerized databases of repertoire does
allow us to correct the statistical record and hopefully clarify the issues.
I applaud Dmitri for organizing and using his database ‹ just pleading,
along with others out there, for a little perspective.

P.s.  Tovey, in a collection edited by Hubert Foss, writes of the Tempest:
³The Finale of the  D minor Sonata is usually taken too fast.  It is only
marked allegretto, and a good tempo for it would be M. 72 to a bar.  Thus 72
bars of this allegretto will take exactly as long as that 16 bar affair [
mm. 1-16] in the slow movement. . . . But to most people who think of music
in terms of phrase-length the fact that 72 bars of this Finale are equal to
16 of the slow movement comes as a compete surprise. ³  Tovey continues with
other comments that suggest the perspective ‹ the comparing of the large and
the small scale ‹ of which I speak.
