Hello all,

In light of the fact that some (many?) of us are currently in the market for
a job, may I request that you make your responses to Keith Salley's request
public? I, for one, have a great interest in knowing the expectations of a
hypothetical search committee member on viewing the teaching portion of an
interview!

Thank you!!

Subject: [Smt-talk] Job Interviews for DMAs

Hello everyone,

I am currently teaching a course on music theory pedagogy for DMA
performance students. I'd like to dedicate my final class to the discussion
of strategies for job interviews, and I'd like your input.

Please imagine (or remember) yourself on a search committee that is charged
with hiring someone to teach an applied instrument as well as music theory
(1/2 a load in each). I'd like to provide my students with some guidance
from the collective wisdom. So, I'll phrase the question this way:

Given that your applicant will not be a specialist in the field of music
theory, what are you looking for (or hoping against) when watching the
teaching portion of his or her job interview? In other words, where exactly
are your expectations? [Consider the teaching portion to take place in an
aural skills lab or a traditional tonal lecture.]

I will share your responses with my students, but I do promise to keep those
responses anonymous.

Please reply privately to <ksalley at su.edu>

And thank you.
