In what sense can a Ph.D be *offered* in music theory? This implies
that the subject of the Ph.D is somehow constrained, even
taught. Surely, if a student is interested in making a contribution to
the field of music theory through a Ph.D thesis, he or she should find
a *supervisor* who is willing and able to supervise his or her
research, not a programme.
