As Bob Kosofsky pointed out, a wiki is a piece of software and Wikipedia
is but one application of that software. Perhaps an optimal solution for
music theory would be a dedicated theory Wiki, sponsored by the SMT and/or
a strong theory department, with an appointed editor-in-chief, limited to
invited and non-anonymous contributors. Such a platform could manage the
real diversity and controversies in the discipline reasonably well and
could be easily expanded to include pedagogical materials, for example
links to open source scores of repertoire demonstrating one analytic
feature or another. And of course, such a platform would provide
Wikipedia itself with an attributable, peer-reviewed source.
