[Smt-talk] less expensive theory texts?

hi SMT list:
here's a question for you all:
has anyone had any luck in developing/finding/using an alternative to the standard theory texts? Is there a good text that's been released through a creative commons license, or something similar? A quickish look at the sites listed at the link below turned up nothing.

My goal is to have something I can assign to the music majors in my first-year theory class. Not a fundamentals text, and not a pop music text.
