A sidebar: Brigham Young endorsed and avidly promoted the teaching of Curwen's Tonic Sol-fa in Utah territory beginning in 1860. The story is pretty interesting, I think, and readable in my book Mormonism and Music: A History (University of Illinois Press, 1989), 48-49. (Search Google Books, under "Brigham Young Curwen Hicks")
