[Smt-talk] augmented 6ths in film scores

Good morning, everyone,

Max Steiner uses the German +6 a few times in his score for Now, Voyager (1942). However, many of them turn out to be V7 in a new key. There is one that resolves to V (parallel fifths included). In my dissertation, I label this as "Charlotte's Theme" (Reel VI, Part I, measures 17 and 18). This is the scene in which Charlotte and Jerry are saying 'goodbye" at the airport in Rio de Janeiro. The cue is modulating from B-flat to A. The V7 in B-flat resolves as the Ger+6 in A, directly to V. I don't have the timing or DVD chapter handy.

Subject: [Smt-talk] augmented 6ths in film scores

Dear collective wisdom,

At the request of some of my sophomores, I am trying to put together a class on chromatic harmony in film scores. Though I've just started being on the lookout for examples, I am surprised to be having some trouble finding augmented sixth chords. Does anyone know of some good examples of

+6 chords in film music? Gr+6 modulations? Any other interesting

+chromatic

moments are also welcome.

Thanks,

Matt Schildt
