Sure, John, you are right that Hermann' birthday deserves all our 
attention. Any potable could do, but 'Bavarian' appears to me somewhat 
approximate. See http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/bwurbrew.htm, where 
you'll find among others a few breweries in Konstanz.

Your statement that Hermann is "one of the few from that era for whom we 
know precise birth and death dates" reminds that so many others would 
also deserve our memory, but we lack the dates.  I believe therefore 
that the wisest and the safest is to celebrate every day of the year, 
with a variety of beverages. This should be the duty of any theorist 
respectful of the memory of her or his forerunners.
