Thanks to all who responded, and to those who pointed me to Cone’s Musical Form and Musical Performance, pp. 75-76, where I found what I had lost, although there’s a curious slip of type there: “But now a look at the bass discovers, beginning in the fifth measure, an exact diminution of this accent! [instead of ascent]"
