What Beethoven heard via his “inner ear” has never been known to anybody. The same applies to what he heard via his ill ears and via hands and feet.

To assume, however, that all these channels could provide as much musical insight as Finale (plus sampled sounds), would be in error. All imagination, including auditory imagination, is based on former perception. Nobody can imagine the color “pink” without having seen it before. The same applies to unheard sounds. Beethoven could not imagine unheard sounds, Finale produces them if used by an intelligent student.
